Dan Simpson is a spoken word poet and compère, poetry projects and events organiser, workshop facilitator and writer. He was Canterbury Laureate 2013-14, Poet-in-Residence at Canterbury’s Roman Museum for the University of Kent, and currently at Knole House for the National Trust / Spread the Word. He was Poet-in-Residence at Waterloo Station for Transport for London, and Bexley’s poet for Southbank Centre’s London Lines project. He is one half of producing partnership Varjack & Simpson, making and hosting regular spoken word shows The Anti-Slam and Poetry Goes Pop!, and the podcast Fail Better.
Dan has performed at major festivals, events, and venues around the UK, including: Glastonbury, The National Theatre, Roundhouse, BBC Radio, BBC Edinburgh Slam, Bang Said the Gun, Tongue Fu, Literary Death Match, and Festival of the Spoken Nerd. He was Larmer Tree Festival’s Lyrical Laureate in 2014. He also performed (poetry) at both a hen party and a death metal gig, and is unharmed.
Dan was a Poet Coach on Apples and Snakes’ poetry in education project Spoke ‘n’ Word, and regularly delivers workshops for both young people and adults. His first collection of poetry is Applied Mathematics, published by Burning Eye Books, and his poems have featured on the BBC and London Underground. Dan creates pioneering work using crowdsourced and outdoor poetry for organisations such at the Royal Academy of Arts, National Museum of Scotland, and the European Commission.
