  Steve Larkin

Steve Larkin is a performance poet, compere, singer and entertainer.  He is six feet tall on a good day, and his hair changes colour regularly. He is responsible for the launch and success of poetry scenes in The UK in The North East, Yorkshire and Oxford.  He was The Co-Founder of A Poets' Stage in Sunderland, Chicken Poetry in Leeds and Hammer And Tongue in Oxford.

He started writing poems when he was ten and was consistently told that he could not do poems for homework by his teachers, poetry and physics being apparently incompatible.  He has been semi-professional since 1994 and gave up the day job to be a full time poet ten years later.

He has been a singer/vocalist with eletronica band Valley Forge and is now the singer with Inflatable Buddha.

"Leeds' hybrid answer to Spike Millighan and Eminem…Poetry at its glittering rawest, acerbic, passionate best." (Vanguard-Online)

"A fixture on the UK's spoken word poetry scene… northern rhythms with a comic twist" - British Council.

"raucous talents… unmissable and on the up" -Box Bitch.

"Poetry for the club generation" -Oxford Mail. /

"an activist who cares passionately about his community, who uses street lyricism to jump across a range of contemporary issues. The paragon of self-conscious 21 st century living" -Isis (Oxford University Magazine)

"Steve Larkin is a poet-philosopher disguised as club entertainer. Lacing profundity with profanities, deep tracks with cheap gags, he weaves comedy, politics and style to leave audiences laughing, thoughtful and infected."- Jim Thomas (The Ecologist)

"Steve's background as a lyricist comes through in the strong, memorable narratives of his poetry, which swings from the gritty territory of suicidal office life, Sunderland and football philosophy to the whimsical world of 'Melody', with a side of sly, reflective humour and occasional tenderness. As an MC, he's a manic gurning god who can whip any audience into a frenzy"- Sophia Blackwell UK Performance Poet.
